Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s principal long-haul hub, and its fare market has been reshaped by one event: SAS leaving Star Alliance for SkyTeam. The nonstops — SAS from New York, Newark, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles, joined by United and Delta on the trunks — now sit inside a different joint-venture logic, and the negotiated ladders have been re-cut accordingly. Periods of transition like this are historically when contract space runs deepest.
The demand profile helps the buyer. Copenhagen’s premium traffic mixes pharma and shipping corporates with a leisure season compressed into the bright months; from late September to April the front cabins need filling, and quotes drop toward the softer end of the European band. Summer — cruise turnarounds, the light-season tourism — is the expensive exception.
As a door, Kastrup is excellent: the airport sits twenty minutes from the centre, the Øresund train puts Malmö and southern Sweden within commuting range, and SAS feeds the whole Nordic map — Oslo, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Billund — on through-fares that price the region as one market. For multi-city Nordic itineraries, entering via Copenhagen is usually the cheapest premium construction.

What did SAS joining SkyTeam change for negotiated fares?
The contract landscape re-formed: SkyTeam constructions over Amsterdam and Paris now feed Copenhagen on the same side as SAS, while the former Star routings compete from outside. Re-cut ladders and new competitive pressure generally mean better private quotes — which is what we currently see.
Is Copenhagen the right hub for a wider Scandinavian trip?
Usually. SAS through-fares carry Oslo, Stockholm and the regional cities at small increments, and the Øresund bridge makes southern Sweden a train ride. For itineraries weighted to Norway’s fjords or Arctic north, pricing Oslo directly sometimes wins — we compare both.
When is business class to Copenhagen cheapest?
October through March, outside the Christmas weeks. Scandinavian leisure demand is intensely seasonal, and winter cabins ride on corporate traffic alone. The same booking made for June — cruise season and the endless daylight — can cost half as much again.
