Istanbul is where east and west actually meet on a route map. Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any carrier in history, and its mega-hub puts the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and most of Africa one connection from a dozen US gateways.
The onboard product argues for itself: flying chefs, candle-effect table settings, and catering that airline caterers elsewhere study. Modern lie-flats cover the new fleets, with the Crystal cabin arriving progressively. Contract pricing runs deep, with US round trips typically negotiating to $2,600 to $3,700 against published fares well above $5,000.
The city deserves more than a transfer. Turkish actively supports stopovers, the new airport is a spectacle in its own right, and a 24-hour Bosphorus pause costs little or nothing on most negotiated fares. Few hubs reward the layover this generously.

Istanbul: common questions
Where does Turkish clearly beat the alternatives?
Anywhere the alternative is two tickets: Tbilisi, Tashkent, Nairobi, Cairo, the Gulf’s secondary cities. One negotiated fare over Istanbul, one alliance, protected connections. For western Europe, obviously fly direct instead.
Which Istanbul airport will I use?
IST for all long-haul and most connections; Sabiha Gökçen serves largely short-haul and low-cost flying on the Asian side. Unless you have a specific reason, plan around IST and its (large) walking distances.
Is the stopover really worth building in?
If you have never seen Istanbul, unreservedly. The fare rules on most negotiated tickets allow a break at IST cheaply, the airline runs stopover hotel programmes, and the city rewards even 24 hours. It is the best free upgrade in premium travel.
