Manila is one of the few Southeast Asian cities with genuine US nonstop service: Philippine Airlines flies from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Vancouver, and United serves it from San Francisco and Guam. Behind that sits an enormous Filipino-American community whose travel patterns, more than corporate demand, set the rhythm of the market.

That diaspora calendar is the single most important pricing fact on the corridor. December and early January — the Christmas season, which the Philippines observes at extraordinary length — sell out months ahead across every routing, as do the summer school holidays and Holy Week. Between those peaks, the market is genuinely soft, and negotiated business fares on both the nonstops and the Asian one-stops price attractively.

The one-stops deserve pricing every time: Cathay over Hong Kong, Singapore Airlines, EVA and China Airlines over Taipei, Korean and Asiana over Seoul, and the Japanese carriers over Tokyo all reach Manila comfortably, often on superior cabins for the transpacific half. Onward domestic legs to Cebu, Palawan and Boracay ride the through-fares cleanly — worth keeping on one ticket given how weather-sensitive those schedules are.

Manila: common questions

How early must I book for December travel to Manila?

Four to six months. The Philippine Christmas season is long and heavily travelled by the diaspora, and premium cabins on both the nonstops and the connections sell through rather than reprice. Holy Week and the summer school break behave the same way in miniature.

Are the one-stop routings better than Philippine Airlines nonstop?

Often on cabin, sometimes on price. Cathay, Singapore, EVA, Korean and the Japanese carriers put you on newer flat beds for the long sector and connect within a couple of hours. The nonstop saves real time; we quote both and state the difference plainly.

Should domestic legs to Cebu or Palawan be on the same ticket?

Wherever possible, yes — Philippine domestic schedules are weather-sensitive and a protected connection matters. Through-fares carry those sectors at modest increments, and it keeps a typhoon-season disruption the airline’s problem rather than yours.
