Upgrade space

The inventory airlines open for mileage or certificate upgrades — a different (and scarcer) pool than seats for sale. Waiting on an upgrade that never clears is the classic premium-travel disappointment. The negotiated alternative: a contract business fare bought outright frequently costs less than full-fare economy plus the miles the upgrade would burn, with none of the uncertainty.
