Business class flights to Australia and New Zealand

The longest journeys we price — and the clearest case for the bed

Reviewed September 2026

Oceania is the furthest most travellers ever fly: fourteen to seventeen hours across the Pacific, published business fares in five figures, and a negotiated gap that is worth more in absolute dollars than on any other leisure corridor. Qantas, United, American, Delta and Air New Zealand share the nonstops from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas and Houston; the Asian and Pacific-island carriers offer one-stops that break the journey on purpose.

That one-stop arithmetic deserves an honest hearing. Constructions over Auckland, Nadi or an Asian hub routinely undercut the nonstops by thousands in business, and a shower and a walk halfway through a seventeen-hour journey has real physiological value. Auckland is also simply closer — a full ninety minutes to two hours less flying than Sydney from the West Coast, which is why it often anchors the whole trip.

The calendar is inverted and unforgiving at the peak: December and January stack the southern summer, Christmas and the school holidays, and premium cabins sell through months ahead on every routing. May through August is the deep trough, and Melbourne adds its own event spikes in January, March and November. Domestic and trans-Tasman legs ride the negotiated ladders cleanly, so build the full itinerary before pricing it.

Oceania: worth knowing

Is a one-stop really cheaper than the Pacific nonstop?

Frequently, by thousands in business class. Auckland, Fiji and the Asian hubs all compete for the same traffic, and breaking the journey has value beyond the fare on a sector this long. If schedule is everything the nonstop wins; if total price is, the alternative usually deserves the booking.

How early must I book for the southern summer?

Three to six months for December and January, earlier for fixed holiday dates. Pacific contract allocations are managed tightly and sell through rather than reprice. Shifting even a few days either side of the peak fortnight changes the quote materially.

Can I combine Australia and New Zealand on one fare?

Cleanly — the open-jaw is the natural construction: into Auckland, out of Sydney or Melbourne, with the trans-Tasman shuttle in the middle. It prices close to a single round trip on the negotiated ladders and matches how the trip actually flows.
