A connection the carrier is responsible for because both flights sit on one ticket: misconnect and the airline must rebook you onward, cover the rules-based accommodations, and get you there. The protection is the invisible value of proper itinerary construction — it costs nothing when everything works and everything when it does not. Its absence is the true price of separate tickets and self-transfers, whatever the search engine saved you at booking.
