The US-China corridor is flying again at a fraction of its former frequency, and the fare structure reflects a market being rebuilt: the Chinese carriers — Air China, China Eastern, China Southern — hold most of the nonstop schedule and price business class to fill it, through channels more than through published fares. For the negotiated buyer, this is currently one of the deepest-discount long-haul markets anywhere.
Shanghai is the denser door: China Eastern’s Pudong hub plus United and Delta service gives it the corridor’s best schedule, and its commercial demand keeps routings honest. Beijing adds the political capital’s traffic across two airports. Both price well; both are backstopped by excellent one-stops — Cathay over Hong Kong, Korean over Seoul, ANA and JAL over Tokyo — that put superior cabins on the itinerary for modest premiums.
Practicalities carry real weight here: visa rules are loosening but changeable, the two Beijing airports sit on opposite sides of the city, and payment and connectivity inside China reward preparation. We flag all of it on every quote — the fare is the easy part of a China trip done well.

Nonstop on a Chinese carrier or one-stop on a regional one?
Price and cabin pull opposite ways: the home carriers quote sharpest on their own nonstops, while Cathay, Korean, ANA and JAL offer better products one stop away. For overnight patterns the cabin matters more; for tight schedules the nonstop wins. We show both every time.
Shanghai or Beijing as the entry point?
Follow the itinerary — the high-speed rail joins them in four and a half hours, so either door serves a two-city trip. On pure fare, Shanghai’s denser schedule usually edges it; on connections deeper into the network, the big three’s hubs each favour their own map.

Current visa and transit rules for your passport, which airport your ticket actually uses in Beijing, and realistic domestic connections if you continue beyond the gateways. All three change; we verify them at booking time rather than assuming last year’s answer.
