Italy’s premium market is really two markets. Milan is the corporate door — finance, fashion, industry — with fares that follow the business calendar and barely notice August. Rome is the leisure flagship, priced by the tourist season and blessed with the wider nonstop schedule. The same negotiated ladders serve both, but they behave differently enough that the right entry point is a genuine pricing decision.
ITA Airways under Lufthansa ownership is the variable to watch: the group’s contract structure now extends across the Italian network, which has deepened the private channel on both hubs. Add the US joint ventures — Delta into Rome, United and American on both cities — and Italy carries more discounted flat beds than its published fares ever admit.
The seasonal rule is the strongest in Europe: April through early July and September-October are demand-priced; the shoulders discount dramatically. And the through-fare game works everywhere — Venice, Florence, Naples and Sicily all construct over the hubs at small increments, on one protected ticket.

Rome or Milan — which should anchor my Italian itinerary?
By trip shape: Rome for the south and the classic circuit, Milan for the north, the lakes and business. Fares rarely split them decisively — Milan is steadier across the year, Rome discounts harder off-season. Open-jaws into one and out of the other price cleanly and suit most first visits.
How do I reach Venice, Florence or Sicily in business?
Through-fares over Rome or Milan carry the domestic hop for little more than the hub fare — ITA connects all of them hourly-ish. Florence also works by rail from either hub. Booking the domestic legs separately is the classic overpayment; give us the true endpoint instead.
When is business class to Italy genuinely cheap?
November through March, Christmas excepted. The leisure tide that rules Rome softens, contract space widens, and quotes can run thousands under the May number. Milan’s corporate demand keeps its floor slightly higher — which is exactly when Rome becomes the better door.
