France is a one-hub premium market with a very long tail. Charles de Gaulle carries one of the densest transatlantic schedules on earth — Air France plus the Delta-led joint venture from a dozen-plus US gateways — and nearly every French journey constructs over it. The exceptions are seasonal: the summer Riviera nonstops, and they carry their own arithmetic.
Air France’s negotiated ladder is the market: contract space on the CDG trunk runs deep year-round, and the through-fare system prices the domestic network — Nice, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Marseille, Lyon — as modest add-ons on one protected ticket. The competing constructions keep it honest: Star over Frankfurt or Zurich, oneworld over London or Madrid, all price France daily.
The TGV is the quiet multiplier: Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, Lille and the Loire are two to three rail hours from Paris, and CDG has its own TGV station under Terminal 2 — an arrival can board a provincial train without entering the city. For many itineraries, the best French fare is a Paris fare plus a train.

Should I ever fly to a French city other than Paris?
For the summer Riviera, price the seasonal Nice nonstops against the CDG construction — either can win. Otherwise the through-fare over Paris or the TGV from CDG covers the provinces better than the thin direct options. Tell us the true endpoint; the ladder rewards it.
When is business class to France cheapest?
November through March outside the holidays — Paris demand is year-round but the leisure overlay drops away and contract space widens. The hard weeks are fashion weeks, the Paris air show, and the Riviera event calendar in May; around those, book early rather than hoping.
Do open-jaw French itineraries price well?
Cleanly — into Paris, out of Nice (or the reverse) rides the negotiated ladders at roughly the average of the two round trips, and the TGV or a domestic hop joins the halves. It is the natural construction for any Paris-plus-Provence or Paris-plus-Riviera trip.
