Portugal is the cheapest serious way to put a flat bed across the Atlantic, and the reason is geography plus economics. Lisbon and Porto sit closer to the US East Coast than any other continental hubs — six and a half hours from Boston — and TAP Air Portugal must fill A330neo cabins from a home market of ten million people. A national carrier in that position prices to win traffic, not to defend a fare structure.
The two doors work differently. Lisbon carries the dense transatlantic bank — Newark, Boston, New York, Miami, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco — plus the onward network to Europe, Africa and Brazil. Porto has its own growing US service and puts you an hour from the Douro instead of three-plus from the capital. On price they run close, with Porto usually a shade softer for being the newer, thinner route.
Two habits pay here. Price the open-jaw — into Lisbon, out of Porto or the reverse costs almost nothing extra and the rail link between them runs under three hours. And remember that Madeira and the Azores ride through-fares at modest increments, with the Azores also carrying seasonal US nonstops worth checking directly.

Lisbon for the capital, the south, and any date-critical itinerary that benefits from more frequencies. Porto for the Douro, the north and often a slightly softer fare. For a trip covering both, the open-jaw costs almost nothing extra on negotiated fares.
Why does Portugal price below the bigger European markets?
A hub carrier filling wide-bodies from a small home market has to win connecting and leisure traffic on price, and the Atlantic sectors are the shortest in Europe. The gap narrows in high summer when Portugal’s own tourism peaks.
Can I add Madeira or the Azores on the same ticket?
